A password-protected directory or area is a folder which can be accessed only when a username and a password are entered, so no unauthorized individuals can check out its content. This feature may be used for the main folder of a certain website or exclusively for a specific subfolder in accordance with the needs you have. For example, if you are building a new website and you do not want people to see it before it is 100% ready, you need to restrict the access to it completely, and if you need only some individuals to be able to access certain files, you are able to password-protect only a specific folder, while the other parts of the site could be seen by anyone. Either way, a “403 Forbidden” error page shall appear when the login details the visitor types in aren't correct. Even a direct link to a file shall not work given that any folder above it is password-protected.

Password Protected Directories in Hosting

All of our hosting packages include a very handy tool that will allow you to secure any folder in your account from unauthorized access with only two clicks. When you log in to your Hepsia website hosting Control Panel, you'll simply have to go to the Password Protection section, to select the main domain or subdomain, to specify the folder which needs to be secured - the root folder or some folder under it, and then to type the username and the password which must be used to access the content in question. The function shall be activated straightaway, so if you make an effort to open the folder/website, you'll be prompted to input the login information. You can set up or remove multiple usernames for the exact same folder, if necessary. When you go to the File Manager section, all password-protected folders will be marked with a tiny padlock icon.

Password Protected Directories in Semi-dedicated Hosting

If you have a semi-dedicated server account with us, you will be able to protect any content that you have uploaded by using our protection tool. Its interface is as basic and intuitive as that of the Hepsia Control Panel it is part of, so you shall not need to type in any code at any time. You will simply have to select one of the domains/subdomains which you have in the web hosting account and to pick which folder should be password-protected - the website’s root folder or some folder below it. Then you can input the username and the password, that will be stored in encrypted form in our system, and you shall be ready. The protection shall be turned on immediately, so anyone that attempts to access the recently secured folder will have to input the right login info. When several individuals must be able to open precisely the same content, you could make a separate username for each of them.
