Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME domain name extension is the sole TLD planned for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. At the beginning, just third-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to secure john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed third-level domains remained online.
